Vault Entry #5: Speaking of Spoilers...

By Melissa Anelli on October 29, 2008 7:53 PM | Permalink | Comments (15)

This talk of the Harry book getting shipped early (and the hilarity how unused to it HP fans are) has made me revisit the part of the J.K. Rowling interview where we talked about the intense spoiling that happened in the leadup to each book after the third. For those who might not have been around for it, each of the last four books featured some extravagant happenstance that resulted in spoiled contents: there were several for the fourth book (see the last vault entry); for the fifth book the copies purportedly turned up in a field near the publishing plant, and the enterprising person who found them called The Sun instead of, oh, walking them back to the plant or calling the publisher; the fifth book also landed on a health food store's shelf in Brooklyn, NY, where a NY Daily News reporter bought a copy, easy as pie, a few days before publication. All kinds of hell broke loose on seven.

But for six, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, something remarkable and terrible happened. There was a gun shootout. We later learned the gun was full of blanks, and the person who shot them should be getting out of jail in a year or so, but at the time imagine the headlines: "Pistol fired over unpublished Potter book." I was in Manhattan when I found out, shopping for some sort of suitable outfit for my pending trip to Edinburgh (a reporter's salary = Strawberry's; a reporter's schedule = roadworn clothing that other reporters don't find objectionable because their shirt has three holes in it too, and neither of you have shopped since before you got your job) when Lizo Mzimba from the BBC called. I had six hangers on my left pinky and four hangers on my right and when he told me I screamed "What?!" then made an unfortunate, yet knee-jerk gesture. Everything fell to the floor. A shootout over a Harry Potter book. Seriously.

(A quick recap: A Sun reporter was called to a meeting with someone who claimed he had a copy and would sell it for about 50,000 pounds; he brought the police, and two shots were fired.)

This event and the circumstances are in Harry, A History, but here's some fuller comment from Jo about the circumstances and the feelings of tension that surrounded the release at that point.

(I've edited myself out of the conversation.)

The quote starts talking about the book five field incident:

"I remember there was a journalist, a TV journalist, who said at the time, very flippantly, 'Ha, ha, it's all publicity, isn't it?" It just felt so out of control at that point, just felt so out of control that the manuscript had suspiciously turned up in a field, that this guy who had supposedly found it just thought, 'Oh, well, the best thing I can do here is phone some newspaper. ... And then of course we hit book six and we think we've seen the most out-there attempt to get a Harry Potter manuscript early, and of course we haven't come close because the we get the guy with the gun. That was pretty serious, that really was not funny. Fiddy told me and I thought it was a joke. I thought she was making a joke.

Just the mere fact that you've produced something that people want to steal, want to put on the Internet, is, for me, very uncomfortable. And when a gun gets involved, the joke's gone out the window. Completely out of the window. I was appalled. The guy who had the gun pulled on him wrote that he'd been in places like Kosovo and it went through his head, "I'm going die for Harry Potter." God forbid.

There is a view out there, 'It's all good,' it all adds to the hype, makes it more colorful. But no, it was really getting out of control. And as people talked about hype it was feeding off of itself, and it was generating this kind of ugliness...that's way beyond leaking plots, that's into violence and intimidation, and who wants to be associated with that? Who wants their work associated with that? You know, let's just publish it two weeks early. Who wants a gun pulled? So you start to get very anxious about it. ... At that level, it's become utterly divorced from what it's about. It's not about the anticipation for a book at all, it's not about love of a story or even wishing to spoil a story. It's become something that people want to be attached to because it's the quickest way they can see to get some publicity for themselves or notoriety for themselves and you have this fringe - I can't dignify them with the word fan because I think if it wasn't Harry Potter it would be Star Wars or it would be something high-profile enough that they could just get a little bit of face-time. ... it's really got nothing to do with Harry Potter, and yet Harry Potter attracted a large amount of that, latterly, I'd say, for the last three books. ... It's raising expectations in an unhealthy way, it's making people sick of the sound of Harry Potter for the wrong reasons, and most seriously you're getting into the realm of literally fraud, intimidation, violence, theft, and nearly always it had nothing to do with fandom.

Wow! I never new about that incident. The book sounds pretty interesting thou! :D

i just wanna know if the books gonnna come to iowa

Wow. The gun incident actually took place in my town Kettering. I really couldn't believe it when I found out! Big big local news... I've since been told by a work colleague that he knows the culprit in question. I've been told that it was also an air pistol rather than a proper gun which I find much more believable.he also told me it was his gun that he borrowed. A lot of this is probably lies but he's quite a dodgy character.

The dark side of fandom: remember, it's derived from "fanatic." And a cultural phenomenon, like a rock star or a politician, attracts fanatics and others who want to bask in reflected light of some greater glory. I feel for Jo, who never wanted to be the flame!

Interesting the parallels to the novels tho...thinking of Gilderoy Lockheart and "its all publicity". And Scrimgeour's conversations with Harry about becoming the MoM's posterboy...

Melissa, again, warmest congrats on the publication of Harry, and wishes for continued success in all that you do. And, of coursse, sincere thanks for all you have done for the world of Potter.....

Sometimes we forgot the authors are humans and they need there space to have a "normal" life if they can get it.

Um...WOW!!! I had no idea that kind of thing ever went on...that's completely ridiculous. And JKR is right, that kind of thing would never happen with REAL harry potter fan...only lunatics seeking publicity do crazy mess like that.

I really hate it when people try to do just about anything to get an HP book early. I hate the publicity surrounding the release of each book. But having gun and violence involved is about the most horrible thing that could happen. And these people aren't even real Harry Potter fans. It's like what Jo said, they just want the publicity. What's even worse about it is that 'outsiders' would think they're one of us. No wonder people think we're crazy -- okay, so maybe we are, but not that way! The real fans among us are really just content waiting for the books and in the meantime speculating about what might happen...

Wow that really does bring a bad name to the fandom. I loved the endless waiting more than the next person but I would never do something like that. I think that JKR has done something great for the world but the people who don't care about this wonderful thing that she invented and just want to make an extra buck should be ashamed of them selves, for making one of the best things in our time have a bad name. Luckely Harry Potter is still known for making kids like me happy for having something so great in our lives. Thanks Melissa, this was iteresting to read!

I was always annoyed that I couldnt go anywhere near the internet, TV or Radio a week out from a HP book release for fear of being spoiled, especially the 7th book. Jo's right, if it wasnt HP it would be some other fandom. People who are out to spoil the book for others are not proper Harry Potter fans.

That's terrible for ms Rowling.I'm so sympathetic with her,I'm sure she didn't wrote Harry Potter for awful stories with big publicity.
Many thanks for wonderful article,Melissa and sorry for lame English!

That really is terrible. Its so far from what the books are about and it really does make people sick of hearing about them. I remember my dad telling me that he was reading an article about the books being left in a field, I'd heard about it already, and I warned him not to tell me spoilers if he found them. And Jo's right. People would be stupid about spoilers for something if not Harry Potter.

Gosh, I really sympathise with Jo on that shooting incident. I always thought the harry Potter release frenzy was simply amusing to her, I didnt think of the dark side of it and how Jo would be understandably distressed. I must admit very guiltily that I laughed when I read the poor police officer thoughts of dying for Harry Potter after all the dangers he's being through. But no one was shot, that's the main thing, though for the police officer, this would have been traumatic and thankfully the gunman was prosecuted. But I hope this was the only incident of its kind. In which case, on reflection, by and large, I think the release parties, build up anticipation, and yes, even the media hype was a tremendous success and an unforgettable experience for all us fans. Well, except for the spoiler war, that part wasn't cool. Another great article with JO, thanks Melissa.

I feel really sorry for Jo. To think that people are being shot at because of something you've done can't be a nice feeling.

And her comments show just how much of a real person JKR is. Sometimes we forget that.

And I personally think the manuscripts appearing in the field near the plant is hilarious!
